Selling a coin collection?
Inherited coins or paper money can be worth more than you think. A few simple steps protect you from low offers.
Five tips before you sell
- Don't clean anything. Cleaning can cut a coin's value in half or more. Leave coins and notes exactly as they are.
- Keep sets and holders together. Original mint packaging, albums and graded holders (PCGS, NGC, PMG) all matter.
- Get more than one offer. A coin show puts dozens of dealers in one room. Ask two or three before you decide.
- Know the bullion value. Silver and gold coins have a floor price based on metal. Check the day's spot price.
- Ask how the offer was made. A good dealer explains which pieces carry the value and why.
Find a coin show near you to get offers in person.
